Mural Art Experiences

A Journey through timeless frescoes

Kerala’s mural paintings are vibrant frescoes that bring to life stories from Hindu mythology. Found mainly in temples and palaces, these artworks date back to the 9th–12th centuries CE and reflect a rich cultural tradition supported by royal patronage.

Creating a mural is a detailed process with four key steps: preparing the wall (usually granite or laterite), sketching the outline, applying natural colors, and adding fine decorative details. Ancient Sanskrit texts guide artists on color symbolism, pigment mixing, and traditional techniques.

Some of the earliest and finest examples can be seen at the Thirunadhikkara Cave Temple and Tiruvanchikulam. Other iconic sites include the Shiva Temple at Ettumanoor, Mattancherry Palace, and Vadakkumnatha Temple. Murals also grace many lesser-known temples and churches across Kerala, as well as historic palaces like Krishnapuram and Padmanabhapuram.

Though the tradition declined during British rule, it experienced a powerful revival after independence. Today, institutions like the Centre for Study of Mural Paintings in Thrissur and Sree Sankaracharya University in Kalady keep this ancient art alive.
